Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to introduce leisure counseling by providing a brief overview of the definition, history, potential clients, applications, and roles of the counselor. Existing research on leisure counseling was reviewed and integrated. Leisure counseling focuses on supporting individual clients or groups to increase their satisfaction with life by using their free time meaningfully. To this end, leisure counseling measures the leisure interests and attitudes of clients, facilitates discussions about potentially meaningful activities, and links clients to opportunities to participate in their chosen leisure activities. Leisure counseling can be used therapeutically, as counselors closely examine each client's attitudes, self-concept, social coping skills, behavioral disabilities, and support systems and then develop individualized support. This paper introduces multiple approaches to leisure counseling, as well as the leisure counseling process as developed by Edwards. Finally, future directions and tasks related to implementation of leisure counseling are discussed.
